LOOK: Celebrities Who Suffered From PCOS (PolyCystic Ovary Syndrome). Here’s What They Do To Treat It!

Are you suffering from irregular or no menstrual period, heavy period, excess body and facial hair, acne, pelvic pain, difficulty getting pregnant and patches of thick, darker, velvety skin?

If your answer is yes, then that is a sign of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS. It is a hormonal imbalance in which androgens (male hormones) is elevated in women.

Once a month, ovaries typically released egg cells but for those women suffering from PCOS it doesn’t happen regularly, this leads to cyst-like formation in the ovaries.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is most likely due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Risk factors involve obesity, not enough physical exercise, and a family history of someone with the condition.

Diagnosis is based on two of the following three finding: no ovulation, high androgen levels, and ovarian cysts. Cysts may be detected by ultrasound.Associated conditions may include type 2 diabetes, obesity, obstructive sleep apnea, heart disease, mood disorders and endometrial cancer.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is most common among women between the ages of 18 and 44. It is one of the leading causes of poor fertility.

Even Hollywood and Filipino celebrities are not exempted from this disease.

Unfortunately, PCOS has no cure, so treatment may involve lifestyle changes such as weight loss and exercise. Doctors may prescribe birth control pills to improve regular periods, excess hair growth, and acne. Metformin and anti-androgens may also help. For those people who are trying to get pregnant and improve fertility includes weight loss, clomiphene or metformin may be used. In vitro fertilization is used by some in whom other measures are not effective.
